The trail to Upper Crossing acts as an excellent entry point into the backcountry of Bandelier National Monument. The backcountry of Bandelier provides hikers with an entirely different experience than that of the main Visitor Center trails. With an average elevation of 7000', the flora and fauna changes as does the chances for viewing wildlife. The backcountry of Bandelier is relatively untouched and offers visitors the opportunity to discover hidden Ancestral Pueblo ruins, petroglyphs and countless uncovered artifacts.

The trail begins at the aptly names Ponderosa Campground and immediately descends through a healthy pine forest

Near the trail's terminus, steep switchbacks lead down through dense greenery until you reach Upper Crossing
